Group Health Permanente President Dr. Michael Soman has long preached the virtues of the Medical Home approach to primary care and compassionate specialty and acute care. Michael Soman, MD, is President/Chief Medical Executive of Group Health Permanente, a professional corporation of more than 900 physicians and clinicians. GHP provides and manages medical services for Group Health Cooperative. Dr. Soman also continues to serve as the executive medical director of the Group Practice Division, overseeing the care of nearly 400,000 patients in Group Health-operated medical facilities.

Dr. Soman has been with Group Health since 1984 in a variety of roles. He practiced for 17 years at Group Health, then served as the medical director for primary care at Group Health, overseeing 20 primary care facilities. More recently he was executive medical director for the Group Practice Division (a job he still retains). He began his Group Health career at the Burien Medical Center, and he was a clinic chief for 14 of the 17 years that he was in practice.

Dr. Soman earned his medical degree from University of California, Davis in 1978, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Washington. He completed residencies in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine and was certified in Sports Medicine as well. He has been a volunteer teacher for Bainbridge Island schools, a soccer coach, and was a longtime member of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
